In late September of 1861 Capt. John Wickliffe, son of ex-Governor Robert Wickliffe, took men of the Citizens Guard in Nelson and surrounding counties to Camp Charity (Old Bardstown Village) near Bloomfield Kentucky to muster into the Confederate States Army. Union forces were moving to occupy Camp Charity, so Capt. Wickliffe met John Hunt Morgan at Simpsons Creek and proceeded to Bowling Green KY. There they were designated the 5th KY Co. “B” or the “Nelson Grays”, part of the 1st KY Brigade, also know as the “Orphan Brigade”.

The Civil War Band will perform at the Village. The band, numbering six instrumentalists plus a vocalist, performs arrangements found in Civil War bandbooks using historic Civil War-era instruments.
